THE BLACK FURY
Gossip blogger, John Perry becomes entangled in a conspiracy story of criminal corruption within law enforcement that inadvertently causes him to be abducted by a mysterious crime syndicate. Miraculously, he survives. But now filled with rage, guilt, and overall trauma from the experience, John becomes morbidly inspired by the charred skeletal remains of his once family and takes on a secondary persona - the very personification of death itself. A dark figure bent on vengeance; The Black Fury.
THE SUIT
“A key detail that sparked my approach to the Black Fury’s overall look was simply from his signature skull crest. The overall creation of the suit actually grew out from first designing the stylized logo. This then inspired the design of the cowl itself, which I absolutely enjoyed doing the most. I wanted it to continue the skull motif of the logo and have it organically mesh with the wearer’s real facial features - while also made to look as a mechanical and tactical piece of headgear.
The rest of the suit grew out from continuing the already established design aesthetics that organically emerged from the shapes and lines found on both the logo and helmet themselves. But along with this, I also went as far as taking queues from the design of protective motorcycle and tactical military gear.”
FIRST APPEARANCE
The first Black Fury was originally created by artists Dennis Neville and Mark Howell, and first premiering in Fox Feature Syndicate's Fantastic Comics #17 in April 1941.
Since then the Dark Hero has taken on different iterations before entering the public domain.
“I absolutely loved exploring this very obscure pulp hero and expanding on who he might be by doing an original modern remake of the character’s story and design.
This is a sort of brief love letter to the kind of work I absolutely love to do, it encompasses everything I love about visual development; specifically in character design, costume design, and overall World-building.
Especially, if it’s superheroes and comics. To the film, game, animation, and overall entertainment industry, consider this my pitch. I’m knocking at your doors.”
